Best known as the bassist of British space metal band UFO, Pete Way and his band are coming down to The Underworld to make some noise. With new solo album Walking On The Edge (which features guests like Slash) he's ready to get back out on the road and do what he loves best, play live.
In the interim he has had a critically acclaimed best selling autobiography “A Fast Ride Out of Here” as well as putting the finishing touches on his new solo album “Walking On The Edge” which has guest musicians including Slash on the Mike Clink (Metallica, Guns ‘n’ Roses) produced album.

Having teamed up for live work with ex Pat Travers, Wild Horses and UFO drummer Clive Edwards, Tim Scopes on lead and slide guitars and ex Waysted multi instrumentalist and rhythm guitarist Jason Poole. Pete will be bringing his solo work as well as Waysted and UFO hits to the stage as vocalist and bass player. He says “I am just desperate to go back on the road. It’s the part of the business I love the most and I’ve been away too long.”

Glenn Hughes

The hearts and minds of Glasgow rock fans were truly divided on a very busy night for gigs in the city, with at least 4 top shows on offer. For me, it came down to a battle of the sexagenarians, with the option of saying farewell to Ozzy and Black Sabbath, or catching the 'Voice of Rock' in the far more intimate surroundings of Glasgow's Garage venue. For me these days, small is definitely better when it comes to gigs, so we got up close and personal with the legend that is Mr Glenn Hughes.

First up though, the matter of the superb opening act, Stone Broken. This West Midlands quartet have been making serious waves over the last year or so, and as expected gave us a very assured performance, with tracks from last year's debut album 'All In Time' and some new material getting an excellent reception from the Glasgow crowd. This is a band going places without a doubt, their arena style rock demands they be hitting bigger stages in the not too distant future. Catch them while you can at these smaller venues, they won't be at this level for very long.

So, the main event. With 45+ years of material to choose from, it's never going to be an easy task to please all of the paying punters, but tonight Glenn Hughes effortlessly did that and so much more. The show kicks off with 'Flow' from the current 'Resonate' album, probably his best solo effort yet. The band, featuring regulars Soren Anderson on guitar, and Pontus Engborg on drums, give a masterclass in classic rock musicianship, with a large dollop of soul and funk to boot. The live sound is the best I've heard in the Garage recently, so Hughes' soaring vocals cut through with stunning effect. Remember the guy is 65 years old, and still hitting the same notes he did all those years ago. Among the highlights for me, a mind blowing rendition of Medusa, a song Hughes first performed as a teenager in 1970 with Trapeze, and a clutch of Deep Purple classics from his tenure in that legendary band. A very funky 'Gettin Tighter' featured early in the set, and an especially poignant and emotional 'You Keep on Moving' giving Hughes the chance to really show that incredible voice to full effect.

Another Purple classic 'Might Just Take Your Life' also gave exceptional keyboards man Jay Boe the opportunity to show his Jon Lord inspired chops on the Hammond organ. The main part of the set finished off with a superb double whammy of Soul Mover and Black Country, with Glenn filling us in on the latest news on the Black Country Communion situation - album number 4 in the can and to be released later this year, something to look forward to indeed! A two song encore was the icing on the cake, with a blistering take on the well named 'Heavy' from the new album followed by the obligatory scorching version of Purple's 'Burn' bringing the evening to a close, and a huge rapturous reception for Hughes, and his band. Glasgow has always had a place in it's heart for Glenn Hughes, and there's no doubt he felt that love tonight, and I for one, can't wait to see him again.

Game, set and perfect musical match

Joe Bonamassa - Clyde Auditorium, Glasgow, 3rd July 2016

Okay, I get it now, I really do; the Cult of Bonamassa can claim itself another acolyte.

Over the years I've bought and enjoyed the albums but could never really call myself a "fan" of Joe Bonamassa, not in the true sense of that word. At least not until now.
Secondly, for various reasons I'd never managed to catch Joe Bonamassa live (and in recent years ticket prices have rocketed way beyond my budget and comfort zone).

But the blues gods smiled this time around and bestowed upon this forgotten soul the chance to review this modern day six-stringed Messiah. (Hallelujah I believe!)

There was also the added bonus of the intriguing format of the current shows – no Joe Bonamassa originals were being aired and the concerts were billed as "The Best of British Blues" with the emphasis on three of Bonamassa's biggest influences, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, and Eric Clapton.

But neither was this ever going to be a run through the greatest hits – there was to be no 'Hi Ho Silver Lining,' no 'Rock 'n' Roll,' no 'Sunshine of Your Love' – this triple homage would be paid on Joe Bonamassa’s terms.

Kicking off with the instrumental 'Beck's Bolero,' rattling through Eric Clapton's 'Mainline Florida' and delivering a rollicking, duelling piano-led version of Led Zeppelin’s 'Boogie With Stu,' this was Joe Bonamassa at his blistering one-two-three best.

The rest of the set covered cuts such as 'Spanish Boots' and 'Plynth' (The Jeff Beck Group), 'Double Crossing Time' and 'Little Girl' (John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers), 'SWLABR' (Cream) and 'Motherless Children' from Eric Clapton’s solo career. Each was played with a fiery Bonamassa passion yet subtle and moving when necessary.

Other highlights included 'Pretending' from ol’ Slowhand’s excellent semi-comeback album Journeyman and an amazing Led Zeppelin mash-up of 'Tea For One,' 'Since I've Been Loving You' and 'I Can't Quite You Baby.' There were also stunning renditions of the instrumental pairing 'White Summer' / 'Black Mountain Side' and show closer 'How Many More Times' (the latter featuring, as Zeppelin did, a snippet of 'The Hunter').

Joe Bonamassa and band then left and returned to the stage to rapturous applause, a standing ovation and an encore of Tim Curry’s 'Sloe Gin,' as brilliantly covered for Bonamassa’s album of the same name.

Special mention must go to the guys behind, and alongside Joe Bonamassa, arguably the greatest "backing band" in blues and blues rock.

Keyboardist Reece Wynans is a renowned blues veteran who has played with such luminaries as Dickey Betts and Stevie Ray Vaughan, to name but two; drummer Anton Fig is well-respected and well-known to viewers ofLate Night with David Letterman as the man behind the kit of that show’s house band.

Michael Rhodes is one of greatest blues bass players you’ll see and hear while the brilliant Russ Irwin brings additional guitars, keyboards and backing vocals to proceedings.

It should also be noted the band only had five days to knock this set in to shape before touring it; however such was the tightness of both the performances and the unit you would be forgiven for thinking they had been performing it for years.

I am constantly blown away by the level of talent on the blues and blues rock circuit, on both sides of the pond; in fact you could argue we are being spoiled in a way not seen since those heady days of the 60s that spawned the three legends Joe Bonamassa paid, and played, tribute to on his "Best of British Blues" tour.

Time will tell if Smokin’ Joe enters the upper echelons of the blues hierarchy to stand beside the likes of Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck but it was certainly fitting this particular performance was slap bang in the middle of Wimbledon fortnight – because it was Game, Set and Match Joe Bonamassa.
